Royals Fall to Spirit in GSAC Opener

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (6-6) dropped their GSAC opener 8-6 to the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit on Friday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Trey Seeley (1-2) took the loss pitching 6 innings allowing seven runs on six hits while walking two and striking out 12. Derek Sims led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Seeley put the Spirit down in order in the top of the first while the Royals offense got work in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one down Sims delivered an RBI single to center field to put the Royals up 1-0. Mario Tostado then followed with a sac fly to increase the lead to 2-0. The Spirit though fought back with home runs in the second and third inning to tie the game 2-2. The Royals then looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and one down the Royals took advantage of a wild pick off throw to score two runs and take a 4-2 lead. Branden Chun-Ming would then drive in another on a fielder's choice to make it 5-2.

The Spirit answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 5-5 and then added two more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 advantage. The Royals quickly answered in the bottom of the sixth as Amari Bartee ripped a triple down the right field line before coming around ot score on a wild pitch and make it 7-6. The Spirit though pulled a run back in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-6. The Royals continued to battle but were unable to put together a rally as they fell 8-6.                                                   

The Royals continue GSAC action at home with two more games against OUAZ on Saturday, February 17 beginning at 11:00 AM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
