Sundstrom's Record Setting Day Leads Royals Over Spirit

La Mirada, CA – The No. 21 Hope International women's soccer team (9-1, 6-0 GSAC) won their eighth game in a row and stayed undefeated in GSAC play as they shutout the No. 23 Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 4-0 on a record setting day on Saturday afternoon at home at Biola University in La Mirada, CA.

The Spirit generated the first chance of the game just a minute in with a long range shot but Royals goalie Haley Slouka jumped and pushed it just over the bar to keep the game scoreless. The Royals then pressed forward on the attack with Christiane Sundstrom being dragged down in the box for a penalty. Sundstrom then buried the penalty to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 4th minute. Sundstrom then doubled the Royals lead in the 27th minute as she launched a banger into the top corner from the top of the box to make it 2-0. The Spirit tried to answer but the Royals continued to dominate as they scored again just four minutes later. This time Frida Vizcarra played a great ball into Sundstrom who calmly finished for her hat trick breaking the Royals record for career goals in the process with 34 to make it 3-0 in the 31st minute. The Royals defense continued to shutdown the Spirit as the Royals took a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The Spirit looked for a response to start the second half and had two good chances but Slouka came up with two more saves to keep them off the board. The Royals then added to their lead as Pressley Honeycutt launched a great ball into the box for Brandi Valdez who volleyed it over the head of the goalie for her third of the season to extend the Royals lead to 4-0 in the 62nd minute. The Spirit kept pressing forward as they looked to break the Royals shutout but the defense led by Slouka held firm as she came up with another big save in the 74th minute. The Royals then had another late chance to score but the shot by Vizcarra sailed just over the crossbar. The Royals then emerged victorious with a 4-0 shutout. Slouka led the Royals in goal playing all 90 minutes while recording four saves.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Life Pacific on Thursday, October 10 at 4:30 PM at the OC Great Park Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, CA.
