Sundstrom Brace Leads Royals Past Firestorm 2-1

Irvine, CA – The No. 21 Hope International women's soccer team (8-1, 5-0 GSAC) won their seventh game in a row as they edged out the Arizona Christian University Firestorm 2-1 on Thursday evening at home at the OC Great Park Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, CA.

The Royals dominated from the whistle as they pushed forward on the attack with Keyla Fragoso and Indi Stum forcing some early opportunities but were unable to break the deadlock. The Firestorm grew into the game as they tried to create opportunities but the Royals defense held firm allowing just one shot in the first 25 minutes. The Royals would then finally break through Alyssa Rubio found Christiane Sundstrom who finished for her 11th goal of the season to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 34th minute. A minute later Sundstrom had a chance to double the Royals lead but her shot glanced off the bar. The Firestorm would then capitalize on the other end to tie the game 1-1 in the 38th minute which is where the score remained at halftime.

The Royals came out of the halftime break looking for the go ahead goal as they continued to pepper the Firestorm goal with shots. The Royals had a flurry of opportunities from Sundstrom, Stum and Keyla Fragoso early in the half but the Firestorm defense and goalie held strong keeping the Royals off the board. With 15 minutes left the Royals finally found the go ahead goal as a deflected pass from Fragoso found Sundstrom who slotted the ball home to put the Royals up 2-1 in the 72nd minute. The Firestorm looked for a response but the Royals defense held strong as goalie Haley Slouka came up with an important save to seal the 2-1 victory. Slouka played all 90 minutes and recorded one save. It was all the 50th career win for Head Coach Scott Dement.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host No. 23 OUAZ on Saturday, October 5 at 3:00 PM at Biola University in La Mirada, CA..
