Sundstrom's Brace Helps Royals Clinch Playoff Spot

Glendale, AZ – The No. 21 Hope International women's soccer team (12-1-1, 9-0-1 GSAC) extended their unbeaten run to twelve games and stayed unbeaten in GSAC play as they shutout the Arizona Christian University Firestorm 3-0 on Friday morning on the road in Glendale, AZ.

It was a very defensive start to the game as neither team generated many opportunities. The Royals would strike first early though as Brandi Valdez played a lovely give and go with Christiane Sundstrom who calmly finished for her 17th goal of the season to make it 1-0 in the 9th minute. Sundstrom then looked to double the Royals advantage in the 22nd minute but her shot hit off the crossbar. The Firestorm looked for a response but the Royals defense held strong holding the Firestorm to just four shots with none on target to help the Royals to a 1-0 halftime lead.

It didn't take long for the Royals to double their advantage as Sundstrom unleashed a wonder strike from 35 yards out assisted by Larissa Perez for her second of the game to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute. The Firestorm once again looked for a response and came close but goalie Haley Slouka was right there to make a great save and keep her shutout streak going. The Royals then struck again late in the second half as Madison Lopez whipped in a great ball that Jordan Galvin headed home for her sixth of the season to make it 3-0 in the 86th minute. The Royals defense then held strong for their fifth shutout in a row. Slouka played all 90 minutes in goal recording two saves while extending her shutout streak to 456 minutes.

With the win the Royals become the first team to punch their ticket to the four team GSAC Championshps. The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Park-Gilbert on Thursday, October 24 at 4:30 PM at the OC Great Park Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, CA.
