Sundstrom Breaks Career Assists Record in 3-0 Shutout of Spirit

Surprise, AZ – The No. 21 Hope International women's soccer team (11-1-1, 8-0-1 GSAC) kept their eleven game unbeaten run intact and stayed unbeaten in GSAC play as they shutout the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 3-0 on a record setting day on Wednesday evening on the road in Surprise, AZ.

The Royals quickly opened up the scoring in the 2nd minute as Jordan Galvin passed to Christiane Sundstrom who set a new career record with 20 assists as she found Brandi Valdez who calmly finished to put the Royals up 1-0. The Royals would quickly double their advantage as Ryley Candelario played a great ball into Sundstrom who fired it home for her 16th of the year to put the Royals up 2-0 in the 6th minute. The Spirit looked for a response but were unable to do much as they managed just two shots on target which Royals goalie Haley Slouka easily saved. Indi Stum had a great chance to score late in the half but was unable to finish as the Royals took a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Spirit came out of the halftime break looking for an answer but the Royals defense held strong under early pressure to keep the Spirit from generating any real opportunities. After weathering the early Spirit attack the Royals pushed forward for more goals and would strike again late. This time it was Keyla Fragoso whipping in a great corner kick to Kalia Lanoza who headed home for her first goal of the season to increase the Royals lead to 3-0 in the 78th minute. The Royals then shutdown the Spirit as they won 3-0. Slouka played all 90 minutes picking up her GSAC leading 6th shutout while recording five saves and extending her shutout streak to 366 minutes.

The Royals continue GSAC action in Arizona as they travel to Glendale, AZ to take on Arizona Christian on Friday, October 18 at 10:00 AM.
