Royals Drop GSAC Opener to Lions 79-64

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team's (10-4) win streak came to an end as they fell 79-64 to the Vanguard University Lions to open up GSAC play on Thursday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

The Lions got out to an early 9-4 lead but the Royals came back with back to back layups from Jonah Felix and Calen Murray to make it 9-8. The teams exchanged buckets from there before the Lions extended their advantage to 18-12 with 13:30 remaining. The Royals didn't let the Lions get away as they answered on an 8-0 led by five points from Grant Sii to take a 20-18 lead with 11:38 to go. The Lions fought back as they went on an 11-3 run to retake a 29-23 lead with five minutes to go. This time it was the Royals time to answer as Tristan Williams nailed a jumper to start a 7-0 run as the Royals retook a 30-29 lead with 3:21 remaining. From there the teams exchanged leads with Sii hitting two free throws to put the Royals up 35-34 before the Lions hit a three to take a 37-35 lead at halftime.

The Lions got off to a strong start in the second half as they opened on a 12-2 run to take a 49-37 lead within the first three minutes. The Royals answered from the line to get within 49-41 but the Lions had all the answers as they went on another 8-0 run to extend their lead to 57-41 with 12:10 remaining. The Royals didn't give in as a Murray free throw made it 60-47 but it was all Lions in the second half as they look a 71-52 advantage with 5:17 to go. The Royals battled back to make it 75-62 on a Gaven Ramirez three but it was to little to late as the Royals fell 79-64. Sii led the Royals with 17 points. 

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head a short distance to San Dimas, CA to take on Life Pacific on Saturday, January 6 at 7:30 PM.
