Royals Can't Hold Off Warriors For GSAC Championship

Irvine, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (33-9) played twice today first taking down the Arizona Christian Firestorm 11-10 to advance to the GSAC Championship game where they lost 9-3 to the Westmont College Warriors at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

Game 1:
Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched 6 innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six. Steven Ordorica (7-1) picked up the win in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out one. Max Jung-Goldberg led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the first inning as they started with a single and a double before a wild pitch brought home the first run of the game to make it 1-0 and then a double play made it 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the second on a sac fly by Omar Veloz to make it 3-0. The Royals then broke the game open in the top of the third. With two on and nobody Jung-Goldberg cranked a two run double to left center to make it 5-0. Then two batters later Robert Mattei ripped an RBI double to left to make it 6-0. Finally a fielder's choice by Branden Chun-Ming put the Royals ahead 7-0. The Royals then added one more run in the fourth as David Rivera crushed his team leading 14th home run of the year to make it 8-0.

Things were looking good from there for the Royals but the Firestorm came to life in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four runs to make it 8-4. The Royals answered though as David Rivera delivered a one out RBI double to push the lead back to 9-4. The Firstorm though kept coming as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-6. The Royals would then score an important run in the top of the ninth on an error to take a 10-6 lead. That run was important as the Firestorm scored four runs in the bottom half to tie the game 10-10 and send it to extras.

In extras the Royals took advantage of an error and then Jung-Goldberg ripped an RBI single to centerfield to put the Royals back ahead 11-10. The Firestorm didn't give up as they got a one out single in the bottom of the tenth to bring the go ahead run to the plate with one. Ordorica though came up big inducing a game ending double play to advance the Royals to the GSAC Championship game.

Game 2:
Tyler Tilton (1-1) took the loss pitching three innings allowing six runs on six hits while walking four. JJ Cruz led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Royals turned to the bullpen as they looked to force a second game to decide the GSAC Championship. It wasn't to be though as the Warriors jumped on top early 2-0 in the bottom of the first. The Royals fought back though as Cruz crushed a two out solo home run to right field to make it 2-1. The Royals then tied it in the top of the third on a sac fly by David Rivera to make it 2-2.

The tie didn't last long though as the Warriors struck for four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. The Royals didn't give in as Jung-Goldberg delivered a two out RBI single in the fifth to make it 6-3 but the Warriors would quickly answer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3. The Royals kept battling though as they tried to start a two out rally in the top of the eighth with a single and a double but the next batter struck out as the Royals eventually fell 9-3.

The Royals will now have to wait and see if they are selected as an at large team for the NAIA Championships. Tune into the NAIA YouTube page on Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 PM PT to find out who they will be playing and where.
