Science & Arts Knocks No. 10 Baseball Out of NAIA Tournament

Lewiston, ID – The Hope International University baseball team (33-11) fell out of the NAIA Opening Round with a 20-12 loss to the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon in Lewiston, Idaho.

Connor Martin (6-2) got the start and took the loss pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing nine runs, eight earned on nine hits while walking two and striking out five. Robert Mattei led the Royals offense going 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

After a scoreless top of the first the Royals took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead. The game remained that way until the fourth when the Drovers scored three turns to take a 3-1 lead. The Royals though fought back in the bottom half. With two on and one out Chase Hanson delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2. The Royals then tied the game on a wild pitch strikeout to make it 3-3. A sac bunt by Alex Moreno then put the Royals ahead 4-3 before David Rivera ripped a two run double to increase the lead to 6-3. Max Jung-Goldberg then delivered a sac fly to give the Royals a 7-3 lead.

That lead wouldn't last as the Drovers struck for 10 in the fifth knocking Martin out of the game in the process as they took the lead back at 13-7. The Drovers then scored two in the sixth to increase their lead to 15-7. The game was then halted for a long lightning delay. When the game resumed the Drovers scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 17-7 lead.

The Royals didn't give up though as they struck for a big bottom of the eighth inning. With two on and one out Alex Moreno delivered an RBI single to make it 17-8. The Royals then loaded the bases before Robert Mattei then crushed a grand slam to left center field to make it 17-12. That's as close as the Royals got as the Drovers would score three more runs going on to win 20-12.

With the loss the Royals are knocked out of the NAIA Tournament.
