Pinal Drives in Five To Lead Royals To Big Win Over Firebirds

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (28-7) won their fifth game in a row as they took down the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds 13-2 on Tuesday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Ryan Lachemann got the start and pitched 3 innings allowing just three hits while striking out two. Tyler Tilton picked up the win in relief pitching 2/3 of an inning allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Matthew Pinal led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs.

After Lachemann worked his way out of trouble in the first by inducing a double play the Royals offense got right to work in the bottom half. With two on and two out Pinal ripped a two run double to center field to put the Royals on top 2-0. The Royals would then add to their lead in the bottom of the third as it was Pinal who came up clutch again delivering a bases loaded single to drive in two more runs and make it 4-0.

The Firebirds would strike back with a run in the top of the fourth but Bailey Roberson would come in from the bullpen to limit the damage while the Royals then added to their lead in the bottom half. The Royals loaded the bases before a walk then pushed the lead to 5-1. Max Jung-Goldberg would then be hit by a pitch to make it 6-1. Robert Mattei then delivered a sac fly to make it 7-1 before Branden Chun-Ming lined a single to right to make it 8-1.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth as the Royals added to their lead. With two on and one away Pinal delivered his fifth RBI of the game to put the Royals up 9-1. Chun-Ming then would drive in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 10-1. The Royals then turned to the bench in the bottom of the seventh as they continued to hit around the Firebirds. With two on and one out Dominic Riggio dropped a pinch hit RBI single down the right field line to make it 11-1. Then with two down Ty Andrews ripped a two run pinch hit triple down the right field line to increase the Royals lead to 13-1. The Firebirds would pull a run back in the top of the ninth but that's all they would get as the Royals emerged with a 13-2 victory.

The Royals wrap up GSAC regular season play as they head to Arizona to take on Arizona Christian with the first game on Friday, April 21 at 11:00 AM at Glendale High School in Glendale, CA.
