Fullerton, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (2-2) took down the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds 3-1 avenging their loss from a few days ago in their second meeting of the year on Tuesday evening in the Darling Pavilion.
The Royals got out to a fast start as they scored the first three points before going on to take an early 10-6 lead. The Firebirds would answer with a quick run as they closed the gap to 12-11 but the Royals went on a 7-1 run led by two kills from
Jon Squilianti as they took a 19-12 advantage. The Royals never trailed in the set as a kill from
Coby Prowse finished off the 25-18 win and put the Royals up 1-0. The second set did not start well as the Royals found themselves trailing 12-6. The Royals quickly regrouped and went on a 5-0 run led by two kills from
Brian Castro to make it 12-11. The Royals would continue to battle as they took a 17-16 lead but the Firebirds came right back to take an 18-17 lead. The Royals then took control as they went on a 7-1 run led by two kills from Pascal Williams to take a 24-19 lead. A service error than game the Royals a 25-21 win as they took a 2-0 lead. The Firebirds didn't go down easily as they took an early 12-8 lead in the third set. The Royals fought back but were never able to take the lead as they dropped the third set 25-18 . After a slow start in the fourth set the Royals raced out to a 14-7 lead. The Firebirds would score back to back points to make it 14-9 but the Royals weren't going to allow a comeback as they went on a 5-1 run finished off by a service ace from
Vance Ishihara as they took a commanding 19-10 lead. Castro and Squilianti then combined with a block to close out the set 25-17 and give the Royals a 3-1 win. Prowse led the Royals with 14 kills.
The Royals continue action at home as they host Simpson College on Friday, February 10 at 5:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
