Royals Stun Sixth Seeded Wildcats 2-1 to Advance to NAIA Final Round For First Time

Marion, IN - The Hope International University women's soccer team (16-3-2) won their eighth game in a row as they stunned the sixth seeded Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats 2-1 in the second round of the NAIA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Marion, IN.

The Wildcats controlled play early on as they created a few chances but were unable to convert. Meanwhile the Royals grew into the game and started to control the possession and create opportunities as Ashlyn Edwards slammed a shot off the bar for the Royals first scoring chance. The Royals then started to dominate as they pinned the Wildcats into their own half and would find the breakthrough. It was Christiane Sundstrom who sliced her way through the Wildcat defense and fed the ball to Sarah Ralston who calmly finished to put the Royals 1-0 in the 25th minute. The Royals kept pushing for more but couldn't add to their lead as they headed into halftime up 1-0.

The Wildcats started the second half strong and came close to equalizing as they smashed a shot off the crossbar early on but were unable to convert. Meanwhile the Royals like they did in the first half grew into the game and doubled their advantage in the 61st minute as it was Sundstrom again who found Ryley Candelario who smashed a goal into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. The Wildcats didn't give up though as they pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute to make it 2-1. The Royals defense led by goalie Haley Slouka then stepped up and held on as the Royals upset the sixth seeded Wildcats 2-1. Slouka played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves.

With the win the Royals advance to the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships final round for the first time in program history. They will take on eleventh seeded Cumberland University on Tuesday, November 28 at Foley Sports Tourism Championship Stadium in Foley, AL.
