Ralston's Winner Leads Royals to NAIA Quarterfinals With 1-0 Upset of Phoenix

Foley, AL – The Hope International women's soccer team (17-3-2) continued their dream season as they advanced to the NAIA Quarterfinals for the first time with a 1-0 upset shutout of the No. 11 Cumberland University Phoenix on Tuesday evening in Foley, AL. It was also the Royals ninth win in a row.

The game was even throughout with both teams generating scoring opportunities. The Phoenix had the first chance but were unable to connect on a corner in the 7th minute meanwhile the Royals first opportunity came in the 15th but Ryley Candelario's shot sailed over the bar as the game remained scoreless. The Phoenix then had a great chance on a one on one with the goalkeeper but the Royals defense forced the shot wide. The Royals then had a golden opportunity in the 35th minute off a Jaylene Valentin header but were denied by a Phoenix goal line clearance. Then ust a few minutes later Keyla Fragoso had a chance but was denied by the Phoenix goalkeeper as the game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime The Phoenix had a good look off a free kick in the 58th minute but were unable to connect. Then Christiane Sundstrom dribbled around several defenders in the 66th minute and had a chance but once again the Phoenix goalie came up with a big stop to keep the game scoreless. The Royals then finally broke the deadlock as Olga Luna's shot rebounded to Sarah Ralston who calmly fired home to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 78th minute. The Royals defense then held on as goalie Haley Slouka came up with two big stops to seal the Royals win. It was the Royals first win at the final site in program history.

With the win the Royals advance to the NAIA Quarterfinals for the first time and will take on No. 3 the University of the Cumberlands on Thursday, November 30 at 5:00 PM PT / 7:00 PM CT at Foley Sports Tourism Championship Stadium in Foley, AL.
