Royals Extinguish Flames 98-54 in Dominant Opening Night Win

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (1-0) opened their season with a resounding 98-54 victory over the Bethesda University Flames on Monday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The teams exchanged leads to start before the Royals went on a 10-3 run capped off by a three from Sebastian Castro to take a 12-6 lead. The Royals then raced out to an 18-7 advantage off a Jonah Felix three. The Flames fought to keep it close as they made it 21-13 with 9:31 to go but the Royals went off on a 23-0 run led by a balanced scoring attack with multiple points each coming from Castro, Felix, Paul Villela, Tristan Williams, Gaven Ramirez, Caleb Christopher and Jalen Shores to take a 44-13 lead. The teams would then trade baskets as the Royals took a commanding 47-17 lead at halftime while shooting over 50% from the field.

The Flames started the second half well as they chipped into the Royals lead to get within 56-33. The Royals though answered right back with a 14-0 run led by led by seven points from Shores to extend their lead back to 70-33 midway through the second half. The Royals continued to build their lead throughout the half as they made it 86-43 off a pair of free throws by Jozelle Carter Jr with five minute to go in the game. The Flames then crawled back within 88-48 but the Royals just kept scoring as a corner three from Angel Sanchez made it 95-50 as the Royals went on to win 98-54. Castro led the Royals with 17 points.

The Royals hit the road as they travel to Livonia, MI for two games with action beginning on Friday, November 3 at 4:00 PM as they take on WHAC Tournament defending Champions Madonna.
