Royals Season Ends With Five Set Loss to Spirit

Surprise, AZ – The Hope International women's volleyball team (9-16, 4-10 GSAC) fought hard but fell in five sets 3-2 to the OUAZ Spirit as their season came to an end on Saturday afternoon in Surprise, AZ.

The Spirit started out with the lead in the first set but the Royals fought to gain the lead as a kill by Cassidy Koffroth tied it 10-10 befoe the Royals then went up 11-10. The Spirit though had all the answers as they crawled back to make 17-15 before closing the set on an 8-2 run to win 25-17 and take a 1-0 lead. The second set was a battle with the Spirit taking an early 10-8 lead but the Royals went on an 8-0 run led by two kills from Koffroth to take control at 16-10. The Spirit kept it within 20-14 but the Royals closed out the set on a 5-0 run finished off by a big kill from Savannah Salter to win the set 25-14 and tie it 1-1.

The Royals led throughout the third set as a kill by Kathryn Schwab put them up 13-10. The Spirit though quickly tied the game 13-13 and despite the Royals retaking a 20-15 lead they came right back again to tie it 21-21. The teams would then exchange points and both had a chance to win it with the Spirit leading 25-24 and the Royals 27-26 but the third time would be the charm as the Royals won 29-27 off a kill from Salter and a forced error by Addie Mathias to take a 2-1 lead. The Royals took an early 8-7 lead in the fourth set but the Spirit responded with a 6-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Royals wouldn't go down easily as they raced back to tie it 14-14 off back to back kills from Schwab but that's as close as they got as the Spirit pulled away to win 25-19 and tie the game 2-2.

The Spirit came out fast in the fifth set as they used a 5-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. The Royals continued to fight as they got within 14-11 off their own 3-0 run but the comeback wasn't to be as the Spirit prevailed 15-11 and 3-2 to end the Royals season. Koffroth led the Royals with 10 kills.
