Royals Use Big Second Half To Down Lions 81-71

Costa Mesa, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (12-5, 5-3 GSAC) bounced back from last week's upset loss with an 81-71 victory over the Vanguard Lions on Thursday evening at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.

It was a tight game in the first as neither team was able to establish a very big lead. The Lions jumped on top first as they took an early 6-2 advantage. The Royals would quickly tie it 6-6 and then go on to take a 16-15 lead on a layup by Jalani Horn midway through the first. That lead wouldn't last long as the Lions retook the lead but the Royals didn't let them get away as they came back to tie it 25-25 on a big three by Tristan Williams with 4:04 remaining. The Lions once again would take the lead though as they led 34-31 at halftime.

The Lions kept their momentum into the start of the second as they led 41-37 several minutes into the half. The Royals quickly regrouped and went on a 7-0 run finished off by a basket from Horn as they took a 44-41 lead with 15:50 to go. The Royals continued to extend their advantage as they took a 54-49 lead midway through the half. The Lions wouldn't go away easily as they got within 56-53 but the Royals answered with an 8-2 run led by six points from Caleb Christopher to take a 64-55 lead. The Lions didn't give up though and got within one at 67-66 with 3:39 to go, but the Royals took over and closed out the game on a 14-5 run as they prevailed 81-71. Horn led the Royals with 17 points.

The Royals return to action at home on Saturday, January 14 at 7:30 PM as they host GSAC opponent Life Pacific in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
