Royals Fall Short in 2OT Thriller Against DIII Bulldogs

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (0-1) opened their season with a thrilling 2OT game that ended in a 98-95 loss to NCAA Division III opponent the University of Redlands Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs took control early as they got out to a 16-8 lead before going on to take a 24-15 lead midway through the first quarter. The Royals slowly but surely fought their way back into the game as they outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 to take their first lead of the game at 33-32 on a layup by Jalani Horn with 3:46 left. The Royals would then extend their lead to 40-35, but this time the Bulldogs fought back as they rallied to take a 46-43 lead with 27 seconds left. The Royals would have the last say as Charles Neal delivered a clutch three with 5 second left to tie the game 46-46 at halftime.

The Royals would score the opening basket of the second half to retake the lead, but the Bulldogs came back to take a 64-56 advantage with 13:13 left. The Royals didn't let up as they continued to fight and stayed within striking distance. The Bulldogs stayed strong though as they took a 76-69 lead with 6:43 left. Knowing they needed a spark the Royals went on a 13-3 run over the next five minutes led by multiple contributors as they retook the lead at 82-79 off a layup and one by Rasheet Wilson with 1:00 minute left. Unfortunately the Bulldogs were able to tie it late 82-82 and force overtime.

The Bulldogs once again took the advantage as they held an 88-84 lead with 3:46 left in OT. From their the Royals defense shutdown the Bulldogs while Neal delivered a clutch three point and one play to tie the game 88-88 with 1:16 left. Neither team were able to find a winner in the remaining time as the game headed to double OT. In the second overtime it was the Royals who took the early lead, but the Bulldogs came back to take a 97-92 lead with :13 seconds left. The Royals didn't back down as Neal hit a quick three to get within 97-95. The Royals then had a late chance to force a tie but came up short as they fell 98-95. Neal led the Royals with 26 points.
 
The Royals return to action at home on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:30 PM as they host Bethesda College on campus in the Darling Pavilion.
