Coach Ty Wynn joined the Royals’ coaching staff in 2016 as an assistant to the men’s and women’s distance track programs. He also works alongside Coach Dan Whittington with the cross country programs at HIU.
Coach Wynn joins HIU from El Rancho High School as the head coach of the cross country and track and field programs. During his time at ERHS his boys’ cross country team won three league titles (2008, ’11, ’13) and his girls’ team won two league titles (2010, ’11). Coach Wynn was a five-time Del Rio League Cross Country Coach of the Year at ERHS and the Whittier Daily News Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2009.
Coach Wynn has also worked as an assistant at Covina from 2010-13. Prior to that and his time at ERHS, Coach Wynn was the Head Cross Country coach at Rio Hondo College for the 2007 season. Coach Wynn was the assistant track and field coach at Whittier College for two years from 2006-2008. Prior to that, Wynn served as an assistant coach for cross country & track and field at Fullerton College from 2004-2006.
Coach Wynn has been married to his wife Jennifer for eight years – together they have six kids: Ty Jr., Sarah, Daniel, Shaylynn, Keylei, and Eva. Wynn was born in Kenosha, WI and moved to California when he was 10. He attended El Modena High School and went to Santa Ana College and moved on to Azusa Pacific University.
At Santa Ana College Wynn placed third in the SoCal Championships and sixth at the State Championships in the decathlon as a freshman and second in SoCal and fourth in the state. Wynn broke the school record in the Decathlon.
At APU, Wynn was a part of a National Championship team for indoor track in 1996 and a runners-up team in 1998. Wynn qualified every year to the NAIA National Championships for track and field from 1996 to 1998 for both indoor and outdoor multis. Wynn still holds the GSAC Championships decathlon record.
While at El Modena High School, Wynn’s team were League Champions in Track & Field his sophomore and junior seasons. During his senior season Wynn helped lead the cross country team to a league title. Wynn also wrestled for four years in high school with two team league titles his junior and senior years.
