IRVINE, Calif. – The Master's scored the game's lone goal with five seconds remaining before halftime and handed the Hope International women's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Thursday at the OC Great Park.
Maddy Traylor – tied for second in the GSAC in goals scored – netted her sixth of the season on an incredible individual effort. Taya Pickup dumped a long pass from deep in the TMU defensive third to Traylor, who evaded a couple of Royals defenders before maneuvering her way into the box. She found space on the left hand side and poked her shot inside the far post for the score.
It was a disappointing finish to a defensive-laden half for the Royals, who were outshot 6-4 over the first 45 minutes.
TMU nearly made it 2-0 two minutes into the second half. Off of a corner kick, Zaria Echemendia headed the ball across the goal mouth to Annika Hernandez, who hit another header off the bottom of the crossbar.
HIU (3-2-0, 2-1-0 GSAC) goalie Victoria Ruiz made a couple of nice saves on Traylor in the 52nd and 55th minutes to also prevent any further damage.
Both teams each produced nine shots in the second half.
TMU (4-1-1, 2-0-0 GSAC) goalie Katie Snow made five saves to secure the shutout. Ruiz also had five saves for the Royals.
HIU returns to action on Saturday against Benedictine Mesa at noon. The game will be played at Biola's Al Barbour Field.
