IRVINE, Calif. – Freshman Anahi Morales completed 18 of 20 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, and the stingy Hope International defense excelled in a 38-0 GSAC flag football victory on Friday at the OC Great Park.
Freshman Madison Powell caught seven balls for 75 yards and a touchdown – one of four Royal receivers to haul in a TD pass on the day.
Layla Mayes grabbed a touchdown pass and finished with four receptions for 57 yards. Ana Sedic and Jazmine Simental also found the endzone as the Royals improved to 3-2 on the year.
Nia Gille also was effective with a pair of touchdown throws on the afternoon.
Ja'Niya Haley scampered for 30 yards on three carries and caught five passes out of the backfield for an additional 26 yards.
HIU wasted no time in scoring on its first drive, as Morales completed a 35-yard pass to Mayes for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Haley rushed for 25 yards on the drive, before Morales hit Simental for a 20-yard score as the Royals went up 12-0. Morales snuck it in from one yard later in the quarter as HIU took a 19-0 lead after converting the extra point.
HIU scored another touchdown in the 3rd quarter on a Haley three-yard rushing score. Toward the end of the third period, Gille connected with Sedic for a 50-yard touchdown strike as HIU led 32-0.
The Royals scored one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
Haley led the defense with two interceptions.
HIU returns to action on Saturday at UCLA for a 7:00 p.m. start.
