IRVINE, Calif. – Hope International owned a 26-4 shot advantage and controlled the run of play for the full 90 minutes, but settled for the 1-1 tie against La Sierra in GSAC women's soccer action on Tuesday at the OC Great Park.
The Royals (5-4-1, 2-2-1 GSAC) pressured La Sierra goalkeeper Ali Razon, forcing her into 10 first half saves, several of the diving variety.
HIU took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on Jacinda Rivera's fifth goal of the season. Rivera got free on the left side, dribbled into the box and beat Razon to the near side.
Despite a 15-2 shot advantage, HIU did not add to the lead and maintained the 1-0 halftime advantage.
The Royals had a great opportunity for an insurance goal in the 68th minute as Brandi Valdez's shot appeared headed for goal, but Golden Eagle defender Monserrath Arellano-Ayala knocked the ball away.
In keeping the deficit to one goal, La Sierra (4-3-1, 1-2-1 GSAC) needed just one chance to find the equalizer – and did so at the 75:23 mark. On the right flank, Tamara Gastelum hit a diagonal backwards pass to Isabella Iniguez. Iniguez took one touch and lofted a shot that floated just over the outstretched left hand of HIU goalkeeper Victoria Ruiz.
HIU outshot the Golden Eagles 6-0 the remainder of the match, but Razon only needed to make one save in the second half, finishing with 11 for the game.
Ruiz made two saves for the Royals.
Emma Valenzuela led HIU with six shots.
The Royals host Life Pacific on Saturday at the OC Great Park for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
