SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Four consecutive first half goals by The Master's subdued the Hope International women's soccer team in a 4-2 loss on Saturday at Reese Field.
The three-match winning streak for the Royals ended as they fell to 9-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in GSAC play. The Mustangs improved to 11-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.
HIU started the match on good terms, capitalizing on a TMU defensive miscue in the 6th minute. Emma Valenzuela intercepted a back pass intended for TMU goalkeeper Autumn Jensen. She sized up her opportunity and rolled her shot into the right corner for a 1-0 HIU lead.
Valenzuela has five goals on the season for third-most on the team.
But the lead was short-lived as TMU evened the score less than three minutes later. Katie Trinh deposited a goal from Bryanna Elias.
In the 30th minute, the Mustangs grabbed the lead for good as Maddy Traylor connected for a goal off a pass from Jane Hato. The Mustangs made it 3-1 in the 36th minute with Harmony Rohde snuck a shot past HIU goalkeeper Victoria Ruiz.
Traylor and Hato linked up for the second time in the 39th minute to increase the lead to 4-1.
The Royals halved the deficit in the 62nd minute as Indi Stum fed a thorough ball on the right side to Jacinda Rivera, who went top shelf for her team-high tying sixth goal.
After getting outshot 19-3 in the first half, the Royals played a much cleaner defensive second stanza. HIU outshot TMU 9-5 in the final 45 minutes.
Rivera and Madison Lopez led the Royals with three shots apiece.
Ruiz tied her season high with six saves. Jensen also made six saves for the Mustangs.
HIU readies for Senior Day on Thursday, October 30 against Park Gilbert. Kickoff in the OC Great Park Stadium is at 7:00 p.m.
