Sundstrom and Candelario With Braces To Lead Royals Past Lions 4-1

Aliso Viejo, CA - The Hope International University women's soccer team (1-1) bounced back from their opening day loss with a commanding 4-1 victory over the SOKA University Lions on Thursday evening in Aliso Viejo, CA.

The Royals created several early chances before opening the scoring in the 26th minute as Ryley Candelario's shot rebounded to a wide open Christiane Sundstrom who finished into the bottom corner to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Royals gave the Lions no time to recover as Sundstrom found Candelario on the break for a second goal less than a minute later to increase the Royals advantage to 2-0. The Lions fought back as they scored off a free kick in the 28th minute to make it 2-1. No sooner had the Lions put the ball in the net then did the Royals return the favor as Candelario scored her second with a blast into the top corner to make it 3-1. The scoring fest would continue as Pressley Honeycutt passed it to Sarah Ralston who found Sundstrom for her second of the game in the 31st minute as the Royals took a 4-1 lead at halftime.

The second half was a quieter affair as the Royals were content to sit back and let the Lions have the ball. The Lions did create several early chances but goalie Hailey Slouka was up to the task to keep them off the board in the half. Meanwhile on the Royals side both Candelario and Sundstrom had chances for a hat trick but neither were able to convert. In the end neither team scored in the second half as the Royals emerged with a 4-2 win. Slouka played all 90 minutes and came up with four saves.

The Royals return to action on Saturday, August 26th at 4:30 PM as they host Rocky Mountain at the Vanguard University Soccer Complex in Costa Mesa, CA.
