Edwards Winner Sends Royals to GSAC Tournament Final

Glendale, AZ - The Hope International University women's soccer team (13-3-2) advanced to the GSAC Tournament Finals with a 2-1 victory over the Vanguard University Lions on Thursday afternoon at Arizona Christian Univeristy in Glendale, AZ.
 
The Royals came out of the gates firing and scored on their first opportunity as Olga Luna struck a shot off the bar that Sarah Ralston latched onto and finished to put the Royals on top 1-0 in the fifth minute. The Royals continued to push for more but were unable to add to their lead. Meanwhile the Lions pushed for the equalizer and were shut down by the Royals backline and goalie Haley Slouka as she came up with two saves as the Royals went into halftime up 1-0.

The Royals started the second half strong as Christiane Sundstrom had an early chance to double the Royals lead but was unable to do so. Both teams continued to create opportunities and it was the Royals who doubled their lead in the 81st minute as Ashlyn Edwards raced down the left side and finished past the keeper on a great solo run to make it 2-0. The Royals fell asleep a little bit as less than a minute later the Lions struck to pull within 2-1. From there the Royals regrouped and shut down the Lions with Slouka coming up with two big saves as the Royals won 2-1 and advanced to the GSAC Championship game for the third time. 

The Royals advance to the GSAC Championship game where they will take on top ranked OUAZ at 1:00 PM MT at Arizona Christian University in Glendale, AZ.
