Shorthanded Royals Take Down Firebirds 5-2

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's soccer team's (7-2-1) continued their season with a hectic shorthanded 5-2 win over the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds on Tuesday evening at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.

The Royals pushed forward from the start but had to quickly readjust when Jaylene Valentin was sent off for a last defender challenge just outside the box. The Firebirds hoped to take advantage but it was the Royals who opened the scoring just minutes later as Sarah Ralston found Christiane Sundstrom for her first of the game to make it 1-0 in the 12th minute. The Royals continued to push forward despite being down to 10 but it was the Firebirds who found the equalizer as they were gifted a penalty in the 39th minute which they converted as the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

The Royals came out of the break looking for more goals and it didn't take long as Ralston was brought down in the box and then converted the penalty to put the Royals back ahead 2-1 in the 48th minute. The Royals continued to pressure the Firebirds but once again they drew a second penalty in the 57th minute that they converted to tie it 2-2. The Royals once again pushed forward for the go ahead goal and found it as Ashlyn Edwards stole the ball, raced in on goal and calmly finished past the keeper to put the Royals up 3-2 in the 80th minute. The Royals weren't content to sit back after that as Edwards played a long ball over the defense that Olga Luna passed off to Sundstrom for her second of the game to make it 4-2 in the 85th minute. The Royals then added a fifth just minutes later as Ralston played it across goal to Luna who fired home as the Royals won 5-2 despite playing most of the game down a player. Zaydee Solis played all 90 minutes in goal recording four saves.

The Royals will return to action at home with a big GSAC matchup against Vanguard on Saturday, October 7 at 7:00 PM at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA..
